For those who haven’t been satisfied with the social credit provided by Google +, here’s some good news: Google has launched a make-your-own-button feature, which gives your +1s instant visibility.
The button is a way to display the number of Google users who have placed +1 votes for your Google + page, and follows in the footsteps of other social media ventures in linking home pages with social profiles.
The new feature is very similar to Facebook’s ‘Facepile’, the plugin which allows you to display of the profile pictures of Facebook users who like your Facebook page. The Google social plugin features a similar format, showing a line-up of some of the Google users who like your page, followed by the actual number of +1 votes. A major difference is that the font of this latter part of the button is bigger than the numbers displayed by Facepile.
The button was launched at the same time as Google + Pages a little more than a week ago, but at the time was in preview form. At present, the badges will display pictures of users who have subscribed to your Google + page, but the search engine company has announced that this pool of +1s will expand soon to reflect votes for your whole site.
The button’s launch is another step in the development of internet-wide business presence, and another indication of the importance of social media for internet marketing. Companies merely dabbling in SEO may find it difficult to compete with social-savvy sites.
